Korean Films: Taking the Spotlight

Long ago, Korean cinema was trapped by the barriers of film censorship. For years, the growth and success of the local film industry were hindered by the government, forcing them to stay in the shadows. As they reclaimed their freedom, collaborative efforts were made to prompt the renaissance of Korean cinema. And soon, they have met and lived the moment. Taking care of their spot in Oscars history.

Parasite, a Korean film directed by Bong Joon Ho, which won an Academy Award for Best Picture in 2020, proved that Korean films can pave their path in international stardom and make a breakthrough. And, before achieving this, they went through unwanted circumstances that they successfully overcome.

Marketing was twice harder for Asian films before. It stood no to little chance for mainstream wide release as language barriers remained unbreakable. Leaving these films with fewer chances of recognition from the Academy Awards. It was like an unreachable dream for many, but not for Bong.

Bong was one of the new generation Korean filmmakers that were busy shaping their film industry’s success—employing strategic choices under his sleeves. He started bringing his exceptional films to Hollywood. It created chaos as some were still not willing to welcome foreign language films. But, thanks to the young generation of viewers, they have seen the greatness of the film and started supporting the social media campaign for diversity in Oscars 2020. It had been the center point of interest, making marketing to a global audience possible than ever.

This year, Minari continuously proved that Korean-language films are worthy of an Oscar. Both Parasite and Minari provided an introspective story and unfolded the realities that many people can relate to. And to showcase it, they have released movie trailers that drove audiences to experience extreme emotions. Once you overcome the one-inch-tall language barrier in the form of subtitles, you’ll find yourself supporting Korean-language films. It will linger like there is no exit point.
